According to the characteristics of materials and the special techniques, we should choose different types of diamond drill bits. However, the most important factors we should pay more attention are to use the machine at a suitable drill speed and drill pressure. Some fixed-speed drills have a minimum speed of 600 or 800 rpm, which may be too fast for many diamond drill applications. Impact type "hammer drills" should never be used with diamond drills bits. Meanwhile, plenty of water should be added for lubrication.
Diamond drill bits are designed especially to grind into the extremely hard materials. Old fashioned spear point carbide bits no longer work on the new type of super-hard floor, counter and wall tiles. Carbide tipped spear point drills are sometimes employed to the softer materials, such as sandstone, marble and some less hard ceramic tiles. Usually, the operators tend to chip the hard surface. As a result, a rough hole will be left and often it causes breakage due to the fractures from the chipping and heat.
The solid point bits are not designed for drilling glass, ceramic tile, limestone, slate, marble, granite, stone, and fibreglass. The drills used on wood or metal have a sharp metal tip or teeth, which cut into the material. These types of drills do not work on glass, marble, etc. as the tips do not "bite" into the extremely hard material, and cause heat build-up that burn up the bit and cause "heat fractures" in the material.
